There are so many great places to visit for a beach vacation in Southeast Asia, but which one should you choose?
Southeast Asia – 6 great spots for a beach vacation
We have compiled a short list of the best destinations for a beach vacation in Southeast Asia. Places where you can relax and soak up as much sun as you like. Leave the stresses of everyday life behind and find some relaxation on a tropical island far, far away. Find some inspiration with our tips, whether you’re heading to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia or perhaps the Philippines.
1. Redang Island in Malaysia
Redang Island off the coast of Terengganu in Malaysia is a true paradise on earth with beautiful blue waters. In fact, soft white sand, turquoise sea and clearly visible marine life seem to be the norm in this part of the world. On our first visit to Redang, we were completely won over by the island right from the start.

The main activities on this quiet and relaxed island are sunbathing, swimming and kayaking. We can recommend snorkeling to anyone who wants to come face to face with some of the most beautiful tropical fish in the world. We had a terrific tour around the island, spotting turtles, reef sharks and lots of marine life.
When it comes to accommodation, there aren’t many backpacker options on the island, although there are a few 4 and 5-star hotels. Our favorite is certainly The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort, with a private beach, small beautiful bungalows and all surrounded by greenery. A great place for a beach vacation in Southeast Asia.

The tranquil island of Redang is an ideal destination to relax by the sea and recharge your batteries. Getting there is not the easiest, but regular boats leave from Kuala Terengganu on the east coast of Malaysia to Redang. The difficult journey is definitely worth it.

2. Palawan Island in The Philippines
The island of Palawan is located in the Mimaropa region of the Philippines and is a paradise full of breathtaking bays, incredible beaches and coral reefs inhabited by colorful fish. The island is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Tubbataha Reefs Nature Park and the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. The waters of Palawan Island are rich in beautiful tropical fish species, which you can admire while diving or snorkeling.

Also be sure to try the local cuisine and the diverse street food with canapés and the most delicious traditional dishes. If you’re longing for shimmering white sand, palm trees and dreamy nature that will reignite your senses, you should definitely consider Palawan Island as one of the best options in Southeast Asia.
For example, you can stay in the popular town of El Nido and then explore the many lagoons of Bacuit Bay on boat tours. If you want something a little quieter and more secluded, try Port Barton. A small town on the coast that is still more difficult to reach and therefore sees far fewer tourists. You can also go on great excursions into the island world of Palawan there. We were on German Island, a little paradise and absolutely gorgeous. So if you’re looking for places for a beach vacation in Southeast Asia, then definitely check out Palawan.

3. Phuket Island in Thailand
Thailand’s largest island continues to attract a large number of visitors from all over the world and is one of the most popular places to visit in Asia. Located on the Andaman Sea, Phuket offers a wide range of picturesque beaches and enchanting bays, with idyllic scenery and fantastic resorts nearby. With our Phuket things to do, you can explore many of the island’s highlights.
The island’s beaches are just waiting to be explored. Our favorite beaches include Nai Harn Beach, Kata Beach and Ya Nui Beach – all located in the southwestern corner of Phuket. But the list of gorgeous places is truly endless. If you’re looking for quiet areas and beautiful beaches, check out the northwest, such as Banana Beach or Naithon Beach.

If you’re looking for great activities or some nightlife in between a beach day or two, then you’ve come to the right place. Phuket’s many attractions include discovering waterfalls, visiting the Big Buddha, enjoying a typical market in Phuket Town and experiencing the vibrant nightlife of Patong on Bangla Road.
In Thailand, it is of course always recommended to try the delicious Thai food. There are many restaurants in Phuket where you can discover all kinds of dishes, such as the famous Pad Thai, the delicious Khao Pad Sapparot, the regional seafood and also international cuisine. Phuket really has everything to offer, from tranquillity to hustle and bustle, you’ll find it all on Thailand’s largest island.

4. Koh Rong in Cambodia
Koh Rong is located off the coast of Sihanoukville in southern Cambodia and is a real gem, characterized by its beautiful nature and peaceful atmosphere. Most of Cambodia’s islands have managed to retain their natural charm and escape mass tourism to some extent. Many tourists still prefer the islands in neighboring Thailand.

Although Koh Rong has become increasingly popular in recent times, the island still offers many undeveloped and quiet spots that are ideal for relaxing and forgetting about the whole world. Apart from Koh Touch Beach, the main party spot, the island is all about swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing on the white, fine beaches.
If you are longing to reconnect with nature and your inner self, to relax and unwind, then we think Koh Rong is a perfect place for you. You can also explore the neighboring islands such as Koh Rong Samloem on a day trip if you get bored after a while of switching off and relaxing.

5. Bali in Indonesia
The list of the best destinations for a beach vacation in Southeast Asia would not be complete without Bali. The Indonesian neighboring island of Lombok is famous for its numerous temples, breathtaking nature, long beaches and the friendliness and hospitality of the people.
If you are planning a romantic getaway with secluded beaches and tranquillity, you should consider Nusa Dua – a beautiful and relaxing area of Bali. On the other hand, if you are party-oriented, the Kuta, Legian and Seminyak regions are certainly more suitable for you with many great clubs and bars. Ideal for a fun night out.

Bali is not short of cultural experiences either, as the island boasts some of the most amazing ancient temples I have ever come across in Asia. The list of these breathtaking sights includes highlights such as Tanah Lot Temple, Garuda Wisnu Kencana and Uluwatu Temple, to name but a few. The whole place of Uluwatu is really beautiful and there is a lot to discover there. For us, it’s one of the highlights of Bali.
You won’t want to miss out on the Balinese cuisine either, which is an incredible mix of spices, traditions and influences and helps to make your stay there even more magical and unique. A Bali vacation has convinced almost everyone so far, which is why this island should be part of our selection, even if we prefer the neighboring island of Lombok. Everything is a little more relaxed there and not quite as crowded as in Bali. But Bali is one of many people’s dream destinations.

6. Koh Lanta in Thailand
Koh Lanta is located in the Krabi region on the southwest coast of Thailand. It is definitely smaller, more peaceful and less developed than many other well-known islands in the country. However, the road infrastructure is good and you can easily get around the island and explore it by scooter.
The selection of beautiful beaches is really large and Koh Lanta is therefore perfect for a beach vacation in Southeast Asia. From the quiet Bamboo Bay Beach and the fascinating Nui Beach to one of our personal favorites, the beach of Mu Ko Lanta National Park – just to name a few. But even if it’s not about swimming, we can only recommend a trip to Koh Lanta National Park on your own. A truly beautiful part of the island.

Nightlife and parties are practically non-existent, but there are other exciting things to do on Koh Lanta, such as visiting the old town, taking a cooking class, snorkeling and kayaking or going on a day trip to one of the nearby islands. If you have a free morning, we recommend heading to the gorgeous island of Koh Rok, which is only 40 minutes away by speedboat.
When it comes to accommodation, there’s something for everyone, from rustic and relaxed bungalows to high-end resorts with infinity pools and modern rooms. The choice is vast and whether you like it simple or luxurious, you’re sure to find the right one.
