My this year’s stay in Ao Nang was quite different, not like the one last year in October, where it rained cats and dogs. I guess just I picked the wrong season for that trip. This time I finally wanted to see some of the beautiful islands offshore from Krabi. The coast is covered with plenty of rocks and small islands, so who wouldn’t want to visit some of them?
Koh Poda: white sand and crystal clear water – simply a dream
A little bit of research on the internet and my choice fell on Koh Poda. It was far beyond my imagination which I had from the reports on the Internet! A paradise with white sand and turquoise colored water. A dream!
How to get to Ao Nang
To reach Ao Nang or Chicken Island it’s best to travel via Krabi. With this option you can fly to the Krabi International Airport which is connected to locations in Thailand as well as e.g. Kuala Lumpur or Qatar. More information about flights, departure times and prices can be found on Skyscanner.
You can also travel by bus or boat (from Koh Lanta etc.) to Krabi Town. From there you can continue your trip to Ao Nang. From the airport or the bus station you will have to take another means of transport to get to Ao Nang.
A Songthaew (shared taxi) from the bus station costs about 80 Baht to Ao Nang. A taxi costs about 400 Baht from Krabi Town or the airport. The cheapest option would be the shuttle bus, which runs regularly from the airport through Krabi Town to Ao Nang, for a price of 100 Baht per person.
Furthermore, you can take the ferry from Koh Lanta or Koh Phi Phi directly to Ao Nang. These boats will arrive at Nopparat Thara Pier and not at Klong Jilad Pier in Krabi Town. To see connections, times, prices and tickets for buses and boats, visit 12go.asia.
Accommodation in Ao Nang – our hotel tip
The selection of accommodation in Ao Nang and the surrounding area is huge. We have stayed several times in Ao Nang and tried some different hotels. Since we are always traveling there by scooter, it doesn’t bother us personally if the accommodation is a bit further from the beach. This way you have peace and seclusion and can totally relax. Very suitable for this is the Deevana Krabi Resort, which is located in the middle of a beautiful green area. Both beaches, the Ao Nang Beach and the Noppharat Thara Beach, are just minutes away by taxi or scooter.

How to get from Ao Nang to Koh Poda
If you want to get to Koh Poda you have no choice than taking a boat. No problem for me, as I love boat rides. You can find some ticket booths near the beach of Ao Nang, where you can easily buy a cheap ticket for a longtail boat, which departs just at the very same beach.
For a return ticket you will have to pay about 300 Baht for each person and the trip takes about 25 minutes. As soon as you purchase the ticket you will have to wait near the boats.
A boat offers space for 6 to 8 persons for the transport. Since many people are doing trips to the islands it usually doesn’t take too long to fill up a boat.
Info: If you like to visit Koh Poda in combination with Chicken Island, Tup Island and the Phranang Cave Beach we can recommend you to do an organized tour.
Arrival at Koh Poda
On arrival at Koh Poda you will have to pay a visitors fee because the island is part of the Had Noppharatthara – Mu Koh Phi Phi National Park. For foreigners it’s about 400 Baht and for Thais about 40. But for a beautiful island like this one I don’t have any problems to pay a fee.
The park ranger whom you will have to pay is waiting right at the beach on your arrival. Your boat driver will tell you a departure time – which is about 3.00 P.M. because the boat service stops running at 4.00 P.M.
Tip: Go there in the morning (about 9.00 or 10.00 A.M.) and you will have enough time to enjoy this wonderful island and you can even discover most of it by walking.
Time to discover the island. You can take some pictures, go for a swim, snorkel or just relax at some shady spots.
Most of the visitors remain at the beach where the boat drops you off and just enjoy the day. A nice option, but a better one in my opinion is to walk along the beach.
There you can find some nice lonely spots and if you walk to the end of the beach you can take some beautiful pictures with some of the surrounding islands like Koh Kai or Koh Tub (often referred to as Chicken and Tub Island) in the background. Just amazing!
Really beautiful. Not too crowded, almost no boats, only spots in the shadow are a little bit rare. After exploring the island, you can return to the beach where you arrived in the morning, since here you can find more shady places and a small shop with some refreshing drinks and beer of course, as well as a restaurant.
This is a part of the only hotel or rather a small bungalow resort, the Poda Island Resort. Apparently, there is only electricity between 6.00 P.M. and midnight and an internet connection is not available at all. If all that doesn’t bother you and you get along with a mobile internet connection from your smartphone (which works well in my experience), you can stay a night on Koh Poda.
Although at this beach all the boats are laying during the day, around 1.00 or 2.00 P.M. it gets really empty and you will get some stunning views and true postcard motives for your camera. Additionally, there is much space for swimming and snorkeling.
A last picture from Koh Poda and the absolutely amazing day comes to an end. I can totally recommend this trip to everyone who’s going to Krabi or rather Ao Nang. All this for about € 10 should be on everyone’s budget.

Hi, I'm Tobi, author, passionate travel blogger and founder of this blog. I've been traveling the world a lot since 2013, mostly in Southeast Asia, but sometimes also in Europe. The Thai island of Koh Phangan has become my home base when I'm not traveling. Find out more on our About Us page.
Hello, it’s August 2019, I’m here in Ao Nang now and really looked forward to go to Koh Poda after reading your blog and others I found online. But sadly, it’s now getting so expensive. Rt shared long tail boat is 300, still the same as you mentioned. But Entrance fee now is 400! 700 baht is about 23 USD. Your food and drinks not included. Minimally, say, you spend 100 on that, then a day in Poda will cost you 27 USD. The whole day 4 destination sort of tour that includes Poda you mentioned is 2200 for 4 people. So, per person that’s 550, again plus the 400 entrance fee, will be about 32 USD…food and drink not included. Sigh!
Hi Rich,
thanks for the info, I updated it to 400 Baht. That’s a lot compared to the 100 before, which adds up to the boat ride. Hope you still enjoy Ao Nang.
Tobi
Hi Toni
What os the name hotel in Poda Island?
Thaks
Hi Maria,
There is the “Poda Island Resort”, but we didn’t stay there and don’t know if it’s good. You can check out better accommodations in Ao Nang here.
Best regards
Marcel
The Park demolished the Poda Island Resort several years ago. I had stayed there in 2012 but we stopped on the island in Feb. 2015 and I snuck around the fences, I found the cabins half bashed in. The lawsuit over whether the permits were valid was resolved only last year. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/national/30352985
Hi :).
Am going to Krabi next year on April with my group of friends and planning to have a relaxing day by the beach.
Which one would you recommend? Koh Poda or Koh Hong?
Thank you.
Hi Yasmyn,
I prefered Koh Poda which is more easy to get to, but mostly also more crowded. Koh Hong was also nice, but we had some bad luck with the tides so the water was very shallow.
All the best,
Tobi
Nice blog!! Excellent images… Red your blog for hong island too… Quite excited about my visit to krabi in march 2018. But i am confused with visiting koh poda or hong island as i only have 2 days to visit krabi. And it seems like we cant explore whole krabi with koh poda and hong island in 48 hours. Can we??… So what would you suggest me (koh poda or hong island?) i am going there with my wife and 4years old kid…
You could actually do both in 2 days. You can buy a boat ticket at the beach and go one day to Koh Poda which is about a 15-20 minutes boat ride and the next day to Koh Hong which takes a little bit longe maybe 30-40 minutes.
There are also islands tours with 4 or 5 island in one day. Maybe that’s an option for you.
Hello Tobi,
great blog! 🙂 I love the colours. I’m planning to go to Krabi on January 2018.
Can I have a question? If we want to travel to different islands (Poda, Tup, Phi Phi…) is it better to stay on the beach Ao Nang? Are there more possibilities to get some boat comparing to Raily beach east?
I’m asking because we booked a hotel on the Raily east but now, considering the best ways to move around, I think it is not the best location for trips.
Thank you for your answer 🙂
Simona
Hey Simona,
thanks. Actually you can visit Koh Poda, Koh Tub from Railay as easy as from Ao Nang since they also have a longtail boat service. But to visit Koh Phi Phi I recommend you to go there by Boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town and stay a couple of nights there, it’s actually still pretty far for a day trip in my opinion.
Cheers,
Tobi
Koh Poda is a really new place for me. I have never visited this place in my life.
Planning on going out to Krabi i April. Have been reading how great the 4 islands trip hopping is. Just want to know will the seas be rough, or are they always a bit choppy. I am not great on boats, also how long from Krabi
Hi Nikki,
usually the sea is always a bit choppy at least with the longtail boats. The islands are not far away from Ao Nang, the beach town of Krabi. It’s like 20 minutes by boat or something like that. I think you should be fine. 😉
Cheers,
Tobi
Good to know, thanks Tobi
Nice post Tobias, love your pics. What time of year did you visit when it was raining horribly? We had an awesome time at Koh Poda too when we were on a snorkeling tour around all the islands. Railay Beach was my favourite – did you get to visit there?
We stayed in Ao Nang too to explore the rest of the islands.
Hey Gale, thanks! It’s was raining horribly in October, so better avoid this time. Besides that I’ve been a couple of times to Krabi in different month and it was always nice. I’ve visited Railay Beach too, but it wasn’t my favorite. I actually like it more when the sand is really white and the ocean more clear, but it’s a nice atmosphere at Railay.
Hi ive been looking for details about time traveling to ao nang from patong. And i hope u can help me. So im staying in patong beach and really want to see koh poda even just for few hours. Can u tell me if im taking public bus to ao nang how long will i get there? So i can hop on a boat from ao nang to koh poda. I was really hesitant earlier cos i wasnt sure how to go back from koh poda to patong but u said boat for 300baht includes return trip. So i guess a bus trip going back to patong isnt an issue if i leave koh poda like 3 afternoon
Hi Jha, traveling from Patong to Ao Nang takes some time. First you have to go to the bus terminal in Phuket town with a taxi or songthaew from Patong. From there you will have to get on the bus to Krabi town, which takes about 3 hours. From there it’s another 45 minutes ride with a Songthaew to Ao Nang beach. Maybe it’s possible to do that on one day, but I think it would be very stressful.
I would recommend to stay a few days in Ao Nang, because you can visit a lot more islands than Koh Poda. There is also Hong island, chicken island and some very nice beaches like Railey and the Phra Nang Cave beach. It’s definitely worth a stay.
Hi Tobais
Lovely blog! Thank you for the info. Had a question, since I am planning a trip to Krabi. U said that you could visit Krabi better this time because of the climate and last trip was ruined because of the climate. Please let me know which months of the year are you talking about for both your trips ! 🙂
Thanks
Shivani
Hi Shivani,
actually my first time in Krabi was in October. It’s like the beginning of the raining season, so it could rain a lot. My second visit was in April, where the weather was much better and tomorrow I’m going to Krabi again. This time in January it’s high season, so the weather should be awesome. I would definitely recommend to stay away in October, but April is fine and the January should also be fine now. 😉
I think the high season is about to start in November/December until May. So that’s the best time for a trip to Krabi!
Cheers
Tobi
