Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations are wonderfully diverse. Between wide sandy beaches, dunes, small harbors, and promenades, you’ll find well-known classics here as well as quieter spots that each feel quite different. That’s exactly what makes the northern coast so exciting for us. One day, the wind really whips around your nose on an island, and the next, you’re sitting at the harbor with a fish sandwich, “Fischbrötchen” (we love fish sandwiches!), or taking a relaxed stroll through a charming Baltic Sea resort town.

Coastal Destinations for a Short Getaway: Seaside Destinations in Schleswig-Holstein

If you’re looking for seaside destinations in Schleswig-Holstein, you don’t have to choose between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. Both coasts have their own charm. Sometimes rugged, sometimes elegant, sometimes surprisingly quiet.

In this list, we’re showing you 10 places and islands that are worth visiting for a day trip, a long weekend, or a full vacation. Among them are well-known favorites, but also two places that we especially like as small hidden gems. Since we grew up in Schleswig-Holstein ourselves, we’ve actually visited many of these pearls several times already.

Of course, these are still far from being all the beautiful seaside places that “the real north” has to offer—just a small selection from us as a little travel inspiration for you.

1. Sylt

Sylt is without question one of the best-known coastal destinations in the north. The island stands for long beaches, striking dune landscapes, and that very unique mix of nature, stylish places, and plenty of fresh North Sea air. Especially if you just want to walk by the sea for hours, Sylt is a real highlight. Even on busier days, there are often stretches where you hear nothing but the wind, the waves, and seagulls.

Impressions of the famous North Sea island of Sylt in Schleswig-Holstein

What we especially like about Sylt is the variety. You can stroll through pretty island villages, drive to the west coast and take in the open horizon, or enjoy nature in the quieter corners. Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations show their rugged yet stylish side here. That’s exactly why Sylt stays in many people’s minds for a long time.

Our hotel recommendation for Sylt: Das Windhuk

2. St. Peter-Ording

St. Peter-Ording immediately feels different from many other coastal destinations. The huge beach is the first thing that sticks with you. Then there are the famous stilt houses, the sense of space, and that true North Sea feeling. Here, you can go for long walks, walk barefoot through the sand, or simply enjoy the sound of the sea.

St. Peter-Ording is especially beautiful if you like things to be uncomplicated. The place has something casual and close to nature about it without being boring. For families, the wide beach is often just as practical as it is for anyone who likes to stay active. When we think of Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations, St. Peter-Ording clearly ranks right at the top for us.

Our hotel recommendation for St. Peter-Ording: Hotel Windschur

3. Scharbeutz

Scharbeutz is modern, relaxed, and, especially in summer, a very pleasant place for a little break by the Baltic Sea. The promenade is ideal for a long walk right by the water, and the beach invites you to linger with its open, relaxed atmosphere. Things are less “wild” here than on the North Sea coast, but they are very pleasant and easy to access.

What defines Scharbeutz for us is its laid-back mix of vacation destination and feel-good place. You can sit down on the promenade with a coffee or ice cream, head to the beach in between, and enjoy the day without much of a plan. Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations often have their appeal precisely when you don’t need much at all. Scharbeutz is a good example of that.

Our hotel recommendation for Scharbeutz: Hotel Meerzeit

4. Timmendorfer Strand

Timmendorfer Strand is one of the best-known seaside resorts on the Baltic Sea. The place feels a little more elegant than many other coastal destinations without seeming overly exclusive. The beach is well maintained, the promenade is lovely for a relaxed stroll, and the surroundings make it easy to spend a weekend or even a few longer vacation days here. The Strandhotel Luv, for example, is very well suited for this—and it’s a place where we ourselves have stayed several times.

A beautiful and popular seaside destination in Schleswig-Holstein: Timmendorfer Strand

Timmendorfer Strand is popular because here, you get the sea, a classic beach resort, and, in some places, a hint of an upscale atmosphere all in one. If you really like it lively, this is the right place for you. Among Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations, Timmendorfer Strand is exactly the kind of place many people love coming back to again and again, even though it can get very crowded, especially during the holiday season and in summer. Still, you should always be able to find a spot on the beach for yourself.

Our hotel recommendation for Timmendorfer Strand: Strandhotel Luv

5. Fehmarn

Fehmarn is bigger, more spacious, and often a bit more relaxed than many people expect at first. The island not only has beautiful beaches, but also corners where you get the feeling that you can experience the coast in complete peace. That’s exactly what we really like here. Instead of staying in just one place, Fehmarn is great for driving around and discovering different sides of the island.

Sometimes you’ll come across rocky stretches of coastline, sometimes classic beach moments, and sometimes small harbors and quiet places with wide views over the water. Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations show a pleasantly down-to-earth side on Fehmarn. The island is ideal if you’re looking for a bit more space and don’t just want to experience a single beach day. Fehmarn is also a perfect destination for a wonderful Baltic Sea vacation.

Our hotel recommendation for Fehmarn: Strandhotel Bene

6. Eckernförde

Eckernförde is one of those northern German places that immediately feels likable to us. The mix of Baltic Sea beach, harbor, and old town simply works well here. You can stroll along the water, wander through the small streets, and keep returning to the sea in between. Everything is close together, which makes the place especially pleasant.

This mix in particular is what makes Eckernförde more than just a beach town. It feels a little like a historic old town, a little like a coastal vacation, and overall, very relaxed. Simply a great mix! If you’re looking for Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations that offer not only a beach but also charm and atmosphere, you should definitely keep Eckernförde on your list.

7. Hohwacht (Hidden Gem)

Hohwacht is one of those places that many people don’t immediately have on their radar, and that’s exactly why we like it so much as a “hidden gem” (even though, of course, you always have to be a bit careful with that term). This small Baltic Sea resort feels pleasantly relaxed and noticeably quieter than some of its better-known neighbors.

What’s especially nice is the relaxed atmosphere. Everything feels a bit more laid-back, a bit quieter, and therefore often more restful. If you’d rather experience Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations without too much hustle and bustle, Hohwacht could be a very good fit for you. It’s especially lovely for a quiet weekend or a few days to switch off.

Our hotel recommendation for Hohwacht: Hotel Haus am Meer

8. Laboe

Laboe is not far from Kiel and is a classic destination if you like the sea and a maritime atmosphere. The beach, the harbor, and the view of the water are what make it appealing. At the same time, you can always feel here that the sea is not just a backdrop, but part of everyday life. That’s exactly what makes Laboe feel so pleasantly authentic.

The place is ideal for a relaxed day trip. You can walk along the promenade, watch the ships, and then simply sit on the beach afterward. Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations don’t always have to be spectacular to be beautiful. Laboe is more about its uncomplicated nature, and that’s exactly what makes the place so popular.

By the way, we’ve written a separate blog post with tips for Kiel.

Our hotel recommendation for Laboe: Hotel Seeterrassen

9. Amrum

Amrum is definitely one of the most beautiful islands in Germany for us. The dune landscape, the sense of space, and the often slightly slower pace make the island special. If you really want to escape everyday life for a while, this is exactly the right place for you.

The island of Amrum with its impressive dune landscape and boardwalks

Especially compared with better-known islands, Amrum often feels a bit quieter, and that’s exactly where its appeal lies. You have space to breathe, beautiful walking paths, and many moments when only the landscape and the sea matter—and in a truly unique way. Among Schleswig-Holstein’s seaside destinations, Amrum is one of the best places for us if you want to experience the North Sea from its peaceful and beautiful side.

Our hotel recommendation for Amrum: Hotel Südstrand

10. Glücksburg (Hidden Gem)

Glücksburg is located in the far north on the Baltic Sea and combines a coastal feel with an almost elegant sense of calm. It’s not a classic hotspot like Sylt or Timmendorfer Strand, but that’s exactly what makes it exciting for us. You get the sea, beautiful views, and an atmosphere that feels more relaxed than overcrowded.

What also makes Glücksburg special, by the way, is the fact that it is Germany’s northernmost town. The top sights in Glücksburg are, above all, Glücksburg Castle (including the castle grounds with park), the pier, and the area along the Flensburg Fjord.

By the way, a visit to Glücksburg is especially worthwhile in combination with the town of Flensburg, which we’ve also already written a blog post about.

Our hotel recommendation for Glücksburg: Lodge am Meer
