Haarlem is a beautiful safe city with plenty of lovely restaurants and bars. Walking is the best way to get around the city . I would recommend hiring bikes and cycling out to Zaandvort which is completely along a cycle path to a stunning beach. There are plenty of museums and the windmill is worth a visit . There is also a food market in the square on Saturday morning

Haarlem in my opinion is a better place to stay than Amsterdam. It is a more friendly setting. Amsterdam is easy to get to by train and see all the sites. I have been to the Netherlands several times and stayed in Amsterdam and other cities but prefer Haarlem.
In the spring, Haarlem is close to the tulips which are a must see.
It has its own unique tourist attractions.

Haarlem is a beautiful city, a welcome relief from the business of Amsterdam. There are fine museums. We especially enjoyed going on a tour of the windmill. We would have liked to tour the Corrie Ten Boom house, but none were available. Seems pretty exclusive since their website recommends getting reservations three to four months in advance.

Very charming town about 20 minutes train ride from Amsterdam. The market at the central square is a must visit. Try the raw herring! Thyler museum is worth a visit too. The Müller-organ in the Sint Bavokerk church is one of the best in the world. Try an organ concert if you like and it is free!

We spent one night in Haarlem on a previous trip, and were excited to go back. We really loved getting to know Haarlem better on this trip. We had fantastic food - from the best pommes frites in the world (Frietkamer), to amazing high end cuisine at De Ripper. We also loved the Teyler museum - a fascinating enlightenment era natural history museum. I could also just hang out by the canal and watch the boats for hours. The whole city is very walkable or bike-able, and it is super-easy to get anywhere else in the Netherlands on public transit. Just make sure to be prepared for the weather - it is very often rainy, and can be quite cool, even in the summer. Honestly, I would totally move to Haarlem given the chance.
Wonderful room, modern bathroom, homelike lounge, and fantastic breakfast array in beautiful dining room. Beds were cozy with lovely comforters. The location near the train station made it easy to " commute" by 20 minute train ride to visit Amsterdam, a quick 30 minute ride to Hague, as well as a 40 minute trip to Delft. It always was calming to return each evening to Lion D'or to take a quick rest and then stroll the inviting streets of Haarlem and enjoy dinner at one of the many nearby restaurants and cafes.
The Niu Dairy was in a great location for visiting the Old Town of Haarlem and a 15 minute walk from the train station. Our room was very quiet- overlooking a large courtyard. The bed was comfortable, and shower was excellent. The room was very clean. There were easy plugs next to each side of the bed. Breakfast had a good selection of hot and cold foods. The staff, especially Sandra & Jasper, were very friendly and helpful with ideas. Even though the hotel was short staffed, they made it work smoothly.
This was our home base whilst we explored Amsterdam and Haarlem. Wonderful staff, warm and clean rooms, great bar within the hotel’s own bowling alley - was nice to have a drink and snack although they have nice restaurants on site we were out touring most days. Easy 10 mins walk to Sparnwoude station - train to Haarlem or Amsterdam every 10 mins. Situated next to a nature reserve. on-site carpark a bonus as we had a hire car. Highly recommend for a few day stay to explore Netherlands.
Henk and Anne-Marie were extremely welcoming and gave us great advice about things to see and do. They allowed us to borrow guidebooks for our days in Amsterdam and Haarlem. The room was exceptionally clean and the breakfast was a great start to each day. The communal 'breakfast room' complete with tea and coffee throughout the day provided a lovely environment to chat with other travellers. The location was great too.
Everything about our stay was 10/10! Truly magnificent! The trim was enormous and the skewing loft for the kids was a highlight. Definitely include breakfast- the food was fantastic but the ambiance was beyond words. I would tel everyone I know to stay here if heading to the area. We are so glad we looked outside of Amsterdam and found this gem!
Incredible staying! We were greatly surprised with a room upgrade when arriving and the room was fantastic! Great services and the personnel were really welcoming. Amsterdam is not far, only 15 minutes by train, and the hotel is well-located in Haarlem, close to fantastic restaurants. I will definetely come back
Stay okay Haarlem was pretty decent and a budget property. The staff is really friendly and helpful. It's a bit far away from the city of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Central) but if you would want to explore Haarlem and nearby areas it's a 10/10 deal! Would definitely visit again and sure for long stays.
excellent Hotel, great location, very clean, staff helpful & friendly, was a bit expensive compared to UK hotels but Holland is overall at lot more expensive than the UK. Haarlem is a lovely city to visit for a long weekend, we have visited Amsterdam but enjoyed Haarlem more.
Great location. Haarlem beats Amsterdam as a base and lots of great restaurants, shops and bars within walking distance and good public transport. Especially good for the Keukenhof gardens, if that is your thing. Schipol airport, coast and Leiden also easy to reach.
The location was perfect to explore the City of Haarlem and was also great for returning to the Amsterdam Airport….hopped the bus across the street and it dropped us off right at the airport.
Esther, our host, was very accommodating! Thank you!
Wonderful location and very comfortable. The staff were brilliant, and Haarlem is a great place to base yourself if you want to do the tourist things in Amsterdam but prefer quieter evenings in a lovely little town with great pubs and restaurants.
I had a lot of Hotel and Guest-Houses in the Netherlands and i can honestly say this B&B is really good. Authentic, Central, self check in, lovely breakfast. Nothing to complain about. There is also a Terrace in a nice backyard :)
We saved a bit of money by staying at the Lion in Harlem for a few days. This hotel provided us a great base for many day trips around the Netherlands. Bright, clean and welcoming staff and a surprisingly larger room.
Beuatiful place in a quite area, i stayed there 2 times. The rooms are amazing and big. The breakfast are delicious. Only 10min walk to Haarlem Centrum, and 5 min walk to Haarlem Centraal Station. Perfection!
Hotel was spot on right in centrum haarlem which is beautiful. Stayed here as an alternative to staying in Amsterdam. Perfect choice. Spent 90% of our time in Haarlem.
Room was clean and functional. Great hotel location, on the Grote Markt, Haarlem's central square. A nice breakfast included with the room. Very good coffee.
The hotel is in the heart of Haarlem. walking distance to everything! The room was very quiet as it was at the back of the building. breakfast was excellent.
